..."Though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them." ~ Psalm 62
Where our treasure is, that is where our heart is also. The world would have us treasure material things over spiritual things: wealth over wisdom, clothing over character, career over calling, houses over holiness, stuff over salvation, riches over righteousness. May our present economic earthquake shake up our heart's priorities!
"Two things I ask of You, O Lord; do not refuse me before I die: keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown You and say, 'Who is the Lord?' or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God." ~ Proverbs 30
Tow huge tests we must all face in the days ahead:
1) To hold on to the truth of scripture (as most clearly revealed in Christ) when lies are what is popular and accepted.
2) To be thankful and content and generous no matter what our financial condition (honoring the Lord as the source and provider of all that is good.)
"So the Israelites did everything the Lord commanded Moses; that is the way they encamped under their standards, and that is the way they set out, each with his clan and family." ~ Numbers 2
If you designed the standard (banner, pennant) for your family, what would it look like?
"This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at My word." ~ Isaiah 66
A heart that is humble can house You, Holy Spirit! A spirit that is contrite can conform to You, O Christ! A soul that fears You, Father, can be fulfilled!
"But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. 'Friend,' he asked, 'How did you get in here without wedding clothes?' The man was speechless. Then the king told the attendants, 'Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' For many are invited, but few are chosen." ~ Matthew 22
To be chosen is to be convicted about changing our clothes- our foul smelling, filthy rags stained with sin and stinking of self. Also to be convinced about our need to put on the clothing of Christ- righteous, holy, clean and beautifully fragrant to God!
"They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers." ~ Acts 1
Prayer prepares us for God's promises to be fulfilled in us. The more prayer in unity with devoted disciples- the more prepared we become for the Holy Spirit to witness through us!
"I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly?" ~ 1 Corinthians 3
If we do not live out what we learn, practice what we proclaim, respond to what is revealed to us- then we are hearers only, not doers of the word- mere infants spiritually! Our actions and behavior display our loyalty and obedience (or lack thereof) to our Lord and God.
"And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him." ~ Hebrews 11
Faith is received through revelation from God. Faith is released through rightly responding to God.
